Hopefully you can see some progress between the newer and older pieces. Also, note that a couple of the pieces are IP (in-progress) or blocking. Naturally, I had the most fun with Linguini in the last few days of the internship, but there just wasn't enough time to finish it. C'est la vie.<br /><br /><iframe width="425" height="238" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/sx1zXJGts1A" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe><br /><br />The internship experience was as great as you would hope it would be. That is how I would describe my days lately. If it's not the film, it's the demo reel. If it's not the demo reel, it's the portfolio. The end of school is just a few weeks away, so it's time to really buckle down & get things done.<br /><br />People have been asking to see something from my film, so here is a little teaser. It's the opening dance , which is my twist on a Paso Doble. I don't want to give too much away, so you'll have to wait until graduation to see more!<br /><br />***Thank you to <a href="http://dansprogis.blogspot.com/">Dan Sprogis</a> for helping me paint this beast.Jamiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13694049372735828217noreply@blogger.com14tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7076410249350541116.post-67485440211869206752011-01-03T20:29:00.000-08:002011-01-03T20:40:53.664-08:00Quadrupeds 101While working on the film I've also been juggling CG animation. Realistically, how many hand-drawn films are being made today? Yeah, so I've recently taken an interest in Maya, and guess what? I actually like it! <br /><br />I'm almost done my first scene, but already moving onto my second; a dog walk to run to jump. Taking the <a href="http://www.ianimate.net/">Jason Ryan</a> approach, I've drawn thumbnails in Flipbook first. If you're a 2D animator wanting to branch off into CG, this method is very logical. <br /><br />Anyway, I'll post both of the rendered scenes when they're ready to be seen. For now, chicken scratched keys...<br /><br /><iframe src="http://player.vimeo.com/video/18412178" width="400" height="300" frameborder="0"></iframe><p><a href="http://vimeo.com/18412178">Quadrupeds 101</a> from <a href="http://vimeo.com/user3938716">Jamie Metzger</a> on <a href="http://vimeo.com">Vimeo</a>.</p>Jamiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13694049372735828217noreply@blogger.com10tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7076410249350541116.post-83036621640700060702010-12-06T17:35:00.000-08:002010-12-06T17:38:58.292-08:00la película, pero no la película<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisbvZRfJXIpDeyUQK7tq3VUGzzCrfrK8cf1Iao2St8P57pBKHDJhvJMhVstRYXzhVqNGd1cGZY_7IFDEBdUuegkNmP9LdMTUi-o7YHyW90QoFZsLARArsnnYUzVdS5o4vZ_QV17uqDMbfe/s1600/red1.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 309px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisbvZRfJXIpDeyUQK7tq3VUGzzCrfrK8cf1Iao2St8P57pBKHDJhvJMhVstRYXzhVqNGd1cGZY_7IFDEBdUuegkNmP9LdMTUi-o7YHyW90QoFZsLARArsnnYUzVdS5o4vZ_QV17uqDMbfe/s400/red1.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5547748206328781362" border="0" /></a><br /><div style="text-align: center;">The film, but not the film.<br /></div>Jamiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13694049372735828217noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7076410249350541116.post-88899036812987493002010-12-06T17:18:00.000-08:002010-12-06T17:34:44.372-08:00the animation that almost was, but may be againPart of my apprenticeship with Charlie this past summer was animating a two-person scene. I'd roughed in the keys, he'd given amazing feedback, and then the monster that is fourth year took over my life. I might find time to come back to this, but it will have to wait until after grad. It feels far, far in the past by now (after two internships and a semester of fourth year having come and gone), plus I think we've all made significant artistic growth since third year. Nonetheless, we did it, we learned a lot, and hopefully it was a good dress rehearsal for this year's independent films.<br /><br />I suggest watching it full screen & in a dark room.<br /><br /><object width="415" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/CrRQKyt8iYs?fs=1&hl=en_GB&rel=0"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/CrRQKyt8iYs?fs=1&hl=en_GB&rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="415" height="344"></embed></object>Jamiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13694049372735828217noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7076410249350541116.post-31189562301372845832010-10-08T21:56:00.001-07:002010-10-08T22:04:54.186-07:00websiteI'm alive. It has been a crazy two months here in the Philippines, and things are just winding down. I'm off to India in a few days, and will take a short break before continuing on with the summer internships. The amount of knowledge and skill I've acquired is more than an entire year at school. Of course, I couldn't have even started these placements without the prior learning done at Sheridan.<br /><br />Here is the second test I've been working on with <a href="http://www.squeezeanimation.com/partners.php?id=2&view_reel=true">Charlie</a>. Again, only keys for now. It needs some fixing, but we're running out of time, so it's on to the next assignment. This was a long one (almost 30 seconds), but the character was so much fun to work with. I am using this inspiration to metaphorically compare the discovery of marital infidelity to a bull fight. That all sounds very technical, but it's really heated, passionate, and aggressive. I am hoping to marry my musical theatre and animation passions in this fantasia-type piece.<br /><br />When I first came to <a href="http://one1more2time3.wordpress.com/">Hans</a>, I had nailed down the storyboards after many revisions, but he felt that I was playing it too safe with the style. (I was.) This month he had me explore many abstract and modern artists, and to my surprise a style was actually emerging. Being more of an animator, I've never developed a style for a film before, but I now see that the story and the style must inform each other.<br /><br />Above is a one of my very quick explorations of a potential style. It most likely will differ from this look, but it's one idea along the way...Jamiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13694049372735828217noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7076410249350541116.post-64034221265127726432010-05-07T00:32:00.000-07:002010-05-07T00:56:33.185-07:00show me the light<div style="text-align: center;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgigRVR7g7RNb5_qdVtrj_D61J1V0sBzEzMnnMVjvvv6sZEDPg0WxMUGL2vJx393ik1rLLzRZuHgHr3y5T3NEGhLstu73LZY1L9acn8GlMmZxYo54wUTxVEw2f3fCFu_YQgoXFLfwoSS-wH/s1600/hans+and+the+light.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgigRVR7g7RNb5_qdVtrj_D61J1V0sBzEzMnnMVjvvv6sZEDPg0WxMUGL2vJx393ik1rLLzRZuHgHr3y5T3NEGhLstu73LZY1L9acn8GlMmZxYo54wUTxVEw2f3fCFu_YQgoXFLfwoSS-wH/s320/hans+and+the+light.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5468428647552908114" border="0" /></a><span style="font-size:85%;"><span style="font-size:78%;">Hans showing us a sliver of his personal<br />animation archives.</span><br /></span></div><br />The summer of the internships are upon us, and everyone says it's the best summer of your Sheridan career. I am spending my summer in the Philippines apprenticing under <a href="http://one1more2time3.wordpress.com">Hans Bacher</a> and <a href="http://www.squeezeanimation.com/partners.php?id=2&view_reel=true">Charlie Bonifacio</a>.<br /><br />Both Disney vets, Hans will be helping <a href="http://oldshoelaces.blogspot.com">San</a> and I develop our visual aesthetic while Charlie will be working on animation with me via Skype. I will be posting some work soon, as doing two internship should produce something worth sharing...if I can live up to their standards. Thanks for checking back. The group film at Sheridan has taken over my life, and doing extra art on the side has been postponed for a while. I have, however, managed to get in a little bit of life drawing. I am really liking portraits. So much so that I am neglecting the rest of the body. Ha. Will get back to that shortly.<br /><br />I would like to promise to post again soon, but the moment school ends I am on a plane to South East Asia for the summer. Things will be busy for a while, but with any luck I will have lots of stuff to post from that working holiday. This is my background for the Action Analysis assignment this semester. We are finally making a completed scene with fully coloured background and animation. I will be sure to post the finished scene as soon as possible, but I wanted to show the bg first because as soon as you add a moving character to a composition that's all you watch.<br /><br />The piece isn't entirely finished, but with the hectic schedule I've had recently, it might be as far as I get with it for a while. Anyway, enjoy for now.Jamiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13694049372735828217noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7076410249350541116.post-3912185684026243282009-12-16T09:41:00.000-08:002009-12-18T12:54:34.351-08:00paintin' a cardboard box<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhz8c9MKiexDtOSjO0E1U0LI9BZ53Z_hyphenhyphenWvk8WzDqYVbRCDheBQ0gAZmil1XEQvijnDKK6zDfzcgquzZn45uHxfuyXLOMVXCNdXlxi9e2MTJPWJKlTbfiLubmt80lan2wb3_x3ZXq1r-DQQ/s1600-h/the+box.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 225px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhz8c9MKiexDtOSjO0E1U0LI9BZ53Z_hyphenhyphenWvk8WzDqYVbRCDheBQ0gAZmil1XEQvijnDKK6zDfzcgquzZn45uHxfuyXLOMVXCNdXlxi9e2MTJPWJKlTbfiLubmt80lan2wb3_x3ZXq1r-DQQ/s400/the+box.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5415891784592159874" border="0" /></a>So, <a href="http://www.oldshoelaces.blogspot.com/">San's</a> been teaching me some fancy-schmancy digital painting techniques, and what you see here is the result of one lesson. This is my first real digital painting. A simple cardboard box in a room. San said, "Make the sexiest box in a room you can." Or something like that. It's been good practice for my Action Analysis project, which has a similar feel and colour scheme. Hopefully, I'll have more dynamic compositions to show soon.Jamiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13694049372735828217noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7076410249350541116.post-42299331637645504062009-11-20T19:04:00.000-08:002009-11-20T19:18:10.756-08:00Royal Winter Fair '09<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYF2SrjuWBap0bynDTBrrlNsnLJ4-viBMgqcXFDAmuo3CoVgmnEie9_w8TSV4X4rBTaFdwI0xxTMvGTqEC-oVgrOb8Nw9blFjPzsWHmV1zbSsuszJUqsX31Y3w_Icw8En5ArOD6l1urrDu/s1600/turkey_strut_line.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 247px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYF2SrjuWBap0bynDTBrrlNsnLJ4-viBMgqcXFDAmuo3CoVgmnEie9_w8TSV4X4rBTaFdwI0xxTMvGTqEC-oVgrOb8Nw9blFjPzsWHmV1zbSsuszJUqsX31Y3w_Icw8En5ArOD6l1urrDu/s320/turkey_strut_line.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5406388146077737074" border="0" /></a><br />It's that time of year again...<br /><br />You gotta love the Royal Winter Fair. I was stoked because I think he has such exciting colours in his pieces that jump off the page. He gave me a few seemingly simple tips that are already helping my work.<br /><br />The cherry on top is that I've been hankering for a longboard (think skateboard meets surfing) for about two years, and I finally found my ideal board hanging in Chili's studio! Left is my new board, and I not wait to go for a ride tomorrow. Unfortunately, I only have two days to enjoy the beautiful valley trails in Whistler, but nonetheless this is a pretty sick ride to school. <br /><br />Chili has the ideal Whistler life; he is a painter, DJ, and filmaker who surfs, shreds, and more. Check his stuff out below, online, or the next time you're in Whistler...which I suggest is sooner than later.<br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQhXwmUa-LusqcmB8X2Bi1qmeSZIr8IaSLtuGDyf2f7nu_GeVSiaVGHynpKmqRjlSqUO8sqRsQogis7-GNp3cuZsEwxK6OaTCsczWcnHqCORxQkCN4BPcCZTzwks0izBsrE07QmHY_6yO_/s1600-h/chili_wave.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 241px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQhXwmUa-LusqcmB8X2Bi1qmeSZIr8IaSLtuGDyf2f7nu_GeVSiaVGHynpKmqRjlSqUO8sqRsQogis7-GNp3cuZsEwxK6OaTCsczWcnHqCORxQkCN4BPcCZTzwks0izBsrE07QmHY_6yO_/s320/chili_wave.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5375167339952959746" border="0" /></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDZOdbHYl07urriEv5yX5urqpGyPtRCtGO6GhacYp6G3tXmuhu6H0t3VeT7R5aW76eWY7SnNs6okZUgbXt3-GaQuUhrUk-HYM3TsZiRdGotMQPuO3YM7EVsCr1GEebfKfu5gsmOAml8YrP/s1600-h/chili_fire_and_ice.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 162px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDZOdbHYl07urriEv5yX5urqpGyPtRCtGO6GhacYp6G3tXmuhu6H0t3VeT7R5aW76eWY7SnNs6okZUgbXt3-GaQuUhrUk-HYM3TsZiRdGotMQPuO3YM7EVsCr1GEebfKfu5gsmOAml8YrP/s320/chili_fire_and_ice.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5375167350292089282" border="0" /></a>Jamiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13694049372735828217noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7076410249350541116.post-24027606912642746542009-08-24T17:34:00.000-07:002009-09-04T07:29:08.312-07:00On That Note...<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFI-drZaUdgfVE6g1UaFHrTBFA6Ssy4-HlB3bARvbRGJY98i_GUn4vxjBq2CFC7xVPy-OhYv4ikf7PVW13J134UgIkZW-bOL8LC0O4d5I1jMo8EFjUfA1UuHu1J6_drWu5v824oP6Y2i8x/s1600-h/rembrandt_oil_base.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 233px; height: 274px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFI-drZaUdgfVE6g1UaFHrTBFA6Ssy4-HlB3bARvbRGJY98i_GUn4vxjBq2CFC7xVPy-OhYv4ikf7PVW13J134UgIkZW-bOL8LC0O4d5I1jMo8EFjUfA1UuHu1J6_drWu5v824oP6Y2i8x/s320/rembrandt_oil_base.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5373693861215550146" border="0" /></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMJJdxsyVKE0CBnuILRPcp2NnlacfJf2zN2uEMDEOFVUdS7JkfXSmX8zyyT6p71Gs7sIReNkK5qOqxUL_RIiQQtz_iE6fxsVt3cL9nrvHUO7FQFBp86Jje5x1WrSsiES4aSLhG_Cvbo8AD/s1600-h/rembrandt_digital2.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer; width: 233px; height: 274px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMJJdxsyVKE0CBnuILRPcp2NnlacfJf2zN2uEMDEOFVUdS7JkfXSmX8zyyT6p71Gs7sIReNkK5qOqxUL_RIiQQtz_iE6fxsVt3cL9nrvHUO7FQFBp86Jje5x1WrSsiES4aSLhG_Cvbo8AD/s320/rembrandt_digital2.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5373693695929941650" border="0" /></a>I know I just said I was going to take a break, but then I discovered something exciting. Ain't it always the way? I've been studying more Rembrandt, and I decided to try an experiment with mixed media: oil and digital.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />I would love to paint my fourth year film in traditional oils, but I also realize that it's extremely time consuming, plus I also need a lot more training with oil. Here, I've started the piece with a traditional oil block-in (above) and finished it in Photoshop (right). I know I can't be the first one to do this; however, it's really exciting because I feel it has the texture and look of traditional media, but I was able to use layers and undo!<br /><br />This study is from a black and white textbook photograph of a Rembrandt, but I still got what I wanted to get from the exercise. I'll just have to get to Europe to paint from the real pieces. Someday...Jamiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13694049372735828217noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7076410249350541116.post-53169993485796228972009-08-21T12:52:00.000-07:002009-08-24T18:07:14.886-07:00Be the TortoiseAs the summer's coming to a close it would seem, from looking at my infrequent blog posts, that I haven't been doing much with art. In fact, I have been doing <span style="font-style: italic;">too </span><span style="font-style: italic;">much </span>with art. In April I decided that I would lay out a summer semester for myself complete with a reading week and three weeks off before the fall semester. I took an extra elective to lighten the fourth year schedule (which I highly recommend doing), and I also set weekly assignments for myself ranging from readings to specific projects such as copying a master oil painting. I did fairly well with sticking to my schedule, and I did learn a great deal, but at the end of it all I am left feeling a little burnt out. I need a break from this break.<br /><br />I am reminded of some strong words of advice given to me by some close friends who are successful, professional artists. In first year, <a href="http://www.dreamylabs.com/blog/">Sam</a> told me that "It's a marathon." You keep a steady pace so as to not wear yourself out. <a href="http://www.amazon.ca/b?ie=UTF8&node=1051582">Robin Muller</a> retold the timeless story of <span style="font-style: italic;">the Tortoise and the Hare</span>. It seems flashy to out-run the competition, but the same advice was given to me in <a href="http://www.randolphacademy.com/sef/page/id/1.html">musical theatre</a>; those who rise quickly, fall quickly.<br /><br />Finally, an elderly man, Colin, sitting across the table from me in this cafe just reinforced the idea of LSD: long, slow distances. In his youth he would try to beat the seasoned cross-country runners to the finish, but whenever he reached the same steep hill each day the older men would breeze past him. He learned that he must pace himself and run alongside his peers instead of always trying to defeat them.<br /><br />I really enjoy what I do, and I want to be able to enjoy art and the animation industry for years to come. It's time to keep that steady pace and be able to last 'til the end.
